Hello Spring.
Spring is a season of renewal, growth, and fresh beginnings. One of the things I love most about entering into a new season is the opportunity it provides to revamp my wardrobe and look at things with a fresh perspective. It allows me to just really have a new excitement to get dressed each day! This feeling is really the vibe of a trend. Trends are meant to be a directive or a pulse-check, if you will. They’re meant to inspire you and give you some insight into the way things are moving and changing around us. We’re social creatures, and we like to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. Trends can help us do that without making everything so rigid. They’re not meant to be bible things that you have to follow.
First and foremost, your shape and silhouette is always going to take precedence when you’re deciding what to wear. From there, you fill in the trends that are appropriate for your lifestyle, your shape and silhouette, and all those kinds of things. So even though the trends you choose to participate in can change, I thought it would be fun if we did a deep dive into some of my favorite trends of this upcoming spring/summer season, and give you a little bit of backstory of how these trends came about and the core root of where they came from, as well as sharing what I’m excited about for the season ahead that will get you feeling good, too!
So, if you’re ready, let’s dive into a few spring trends that you oughta know.
No. 1 - Cargo / utilitarian
This trend is really popular for this season, and emphasizes the practical design and functionality of the pieces. These pieces generally feature neutral colors, multiple pockets, and heavier types of fabrics. This trend can really be traced back to military or workwear roots. Although the appearance has softened for this trend today, the utilitarian look hearkens back to World War II era cargo pants, which were originally designed to allow paratroopers to carry extra supplies. After the war, these pants remained popular among civilians who appreciated the practicality and durability. Cargo pants had a rebirth in the 1960s and 1970s as a bit of a rejection of the mainstream fashion industry, and a call to focus on comfort over aesthetics. In the 90s, cargo pants had another resurgence in the fashion world. Similarly, in the early 2000s, cargo pants rose to popularity again. Now, the trend has grown beyond just pants to include jackets and vests, as well as other accessories. I am really loving this look right now, especially paired with some softer pieces, like utilitarian pants with a silk top and some dainty heels.
No. 2 - Sheer
I am loving the sheer trend this season! Sheer pieces date back in history all the way to ancient civilizations, but the trend really began gaining speed in the 1920s with sheer silk stockings. Next, iconic designers like Coco Chanel began incorporating translucent fabrics into their designs. Sheer didn’t have another resurgance until the 1980s when designers like Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler started using sheer fabrics like mesh, and again in the 1990s with designers like Calvin Klein. My favorite use of the sheer trend in fashion though, is now! I think sheer pieces evoke such beauty and femininity. It can add a touch of subtle sexiness to a look, and I think that’s such a fun quality to bring to the spring and summer seasons!
No. 3 - The Denim Skirt
The third and final spring trend I really want you to know about is the denim skirt! This trend has a long and interesting history. The denim skirt first hit the scene as casual wear around the 1970s, and they were typically associated with youthful looks. In this era, denim skirts were typically a way to repurpose denim pants. This piece was a perfect fit for the flower child vibes of the 1970s, and was often adorned with various patches. In the 80s, we saw acid wash and a more worn-in look of denim skirts, and we saw big designers like Calvin Klein incorporating them into their collections. In the 90s, denim mini skirts were having a major moment, and we also starting to see a more distressed look hit the scene. Throughout the early 2000s, we saw some longer denim skirts, especially ones that incorporated embroidery or knee length skirts with front slits and tall boots. Now, we’re seeing a draw towards midi-length A-line or button-front denim skirts, often paired with ankle boots and a chunky knit. To bring this trend into the warmer weather season, I’m personally loving pairing them with a graphic tee and sneakers for a comfy, on-the-go look.
So gals, that’s it! These are my three favorite trends for the 2023 spring and summer season! I hope this inspires you to try out a new trend - one that feels like the best, most well-fashioned version of you!
EN VERITE,
Candace
