Roughly five years ago, I made the decision to go natural. It was a hard one, but I felt it was necessary, as my relaxed hair was completely wrecked. In May of 2013, just a month before our wedding, I did the big chop. For the greater majority of the last five years, I’ve been rocking sew-ins. However, this past November I was feeling particularly brave to go without my extensions for an extended period of time. It’s been GREAT! But I’ve yet to embrace my curls! I know, I know absolute craziness, especially after investing all that time and energy to go natural!
As I began this new adventure of embracing my curls, I knew that finding THE RIGHT products would be essential! Over the years, I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about SheaMoisture! So, I geared up for a trip to Walmart, which is a great place to find hair care products at everyday low prices! During my curly girl shopping haul from Walmart, I landed on these 3 products from SheaMoisture:
- SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo
- SheaMoisture Raw Shea Deep Treatment Masque
- SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé
While SheaMoisture has a range of incredible hair products for various hair needs, I felt that these three could help me achieve my goals of creating an easy, but effective wash day process for my curls! Here’s a quick rundown of my new found curly routine: It’s no surprise, but a good shampoo is essential! This shampoo helps to restore moisture (which is HUGE for curly hair), while also giving it body and shine. This product is also good for thick hair! Despite the looks of my straight hair, I’ve got a lot of HAIR! Also, I feel that I should mention the fragrance because it is absolutely divine! Coconut and Hibiscus. For this step of my wash day process, apply the shampoo, rinse and repeat 1x.
Because I’ve mostly worn my hair straight for several months, I felt that a deep condition was in order. In fact, I’ve been told that consistent treatments are another essential detail for curly hair maintenance. Rather than using a traditional conditioner, I substituted it for the SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque. This is great in aiding hair healing, growth and strength! You simply apply product from roots to ends. Comb product through hair thoroughly and leave in for a minimum of 5 minutes! If you have the extra time, try further activating this product with heat by sitting under a hooded dryer! You will see even greater results.
And lastly, it’s all about the styling! Even with curly hair, it’s important to find a product that helps give your curls more definition! Because of my regular use of heat and the simple fact that I’ve never worn my curls for an extended period of time, finding a great styling product was another essential detail. With its smooth, gel-like consistency, the SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Soufflé helps to give curls definition, reduce frizz and store moisture in the hair! After rinsing out the hair masque, you will want to loosely dry your hair. Perhaps with a t-shirt or just by scrunching in your hands. After a little detangling, you will section off your hair and — starting at the back— you will apply the curling soufflé! With this product, you can either do a simple wash and go or utilize it for a twist out of some sort!
Just a quick glimpse into the beginning of my curly girl journey. I’m looking forward to continually discovering how SheaMoisture can help me achieve the best curls possible! If you need to find me this weekend, I will mostly like be at Walmart cruising the SheaMoisture aisle stocking up on other product essentials!
